About facing Jerusalem
Which direction do Jews face when praying?
Jews face toward Jerusalem and the site of the Temple (the Temple Mount). In the West this is roughly east, which is why the wall one faces is called the mizrach (“east”); from places east of Israel one faces west. The compass on this page computes the exact great-circle direction from wherever you are.
Is the direction exactly east?
Only approximately, and only from some locations. The true direction is the shortest path over the globe to Jerusalem, which can be noticeably north or south of due east depending on where you are. The bearing shown here is that great-circle direction.
